Cabinets and 401k

December 11th, 2007 · No Comments

In a follow up to the Swiss_Mouse’s last post about the $10,000 couch….

Swiss_Mouse once worked with a young woman.  She was attractive, with beautiful eyes, long dark hair and with very large….ahem…shall we say assets.

Now this young lady was single, for multiple reasons.  One being that she had a mouth that spewed so many obscenities that she could have made Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor blush.

This co-worker shoved her money away though in the company 401k, very wise.

BUT when the time came to buy new cabinets for her kitchen, she broke the cardinal rule of saving. She borrowed from her 401k.   She justified her reasoning, both loudly and obscenity laced, by saying that she was “paying herself back”.

Now the Swiss_Mouse tried to convince her that it was a bad idea.  But she ignored him.  She borrowed on the 401k and then proceeded to pay herself back over the next 2 years.

Don’t do this folks.  You might not get penalized for doing this, but why bother with your retirement savings for cabinets. The Swiss_Mouse hopes she enjoyed them.  He can’t calculate that cost.
